I purchased brofax.com while home sick with the flu last January, and it’s been one of the most educational decisions I’ve ever made under the influence of a high fever.

I’ve learned more about the culture of blogging, CSS, design, SEO, WordPress and the ungraceful ballet required to keep all of the various Web 2.0 services working in concert in that year than any classroom or seminar could have possibly taught me.

Unfortunately, I’m busier than ever at work and Brofax has obviously taken a hit because of it (it’s not like I get paid to write this stuff, no matter how much more fun it is). That’s why I’m going to pull the plug on brofax.com entirely in a few days on the 1-year anniversary of its birth (great, with that metaphor now I feel like a child murderer).

Brofax was always an experiment for me (I’ve had probably close to 50 themes on this site) and had no real clear defining purpose, which I think kept me from wanting to write on it lately (I apparently crave structure. Who knew?).

I am going to purchase two domains in the very near future, probably after my next paycheck, to serve as my a) online identity/splash page b) online home in the future (I’d tell you what they were, but I don’t want to risk getting sniped). I need a tabula rosa that I can really think out fully before I get going, rather than try to play it by ear as I go along, like I did with Brofax.

I suppose it’s worth the few dollars it will take to continue hosting brofax as an archive for a year or so, but I’m done with making anything new on it.

Thanks to everyone who read/commented on this blog. I look forward to seeing you on my new sites.

Day 30

Over at the Web site/newspaper where I am the managing editor, I’ve been trying to figure out ways to have fun and be creative on its admittedly very dated framework.

The best I could come up with was a personal challenge-turned-project where I take and post one photo every day for six months on my work blog:http://denver.yourhub.com/~eric Needless to say, besides the ridiculous amount of work I have to do to keep all 45 Web sites and 18 print editions running smoothly (I’m the only manager for the entire staff), taking and posting all of those photos is quite a timesink as well, albiet a welcome one. I don’t get much chance for creativity lately (as evidenced by the extreme lack of activity on this very blog), so forcing myself to fire at least one or two synapses in service of nothing but fun is fantastic.

Once I post the photo for Dec. 12, I will be exactly one month into my six-month project. I’ve got to say, I didn’t think I would make it and keep at it as much as I have. I must be just that starved for an outlet. YourHub is *fingers crossed* getting an entirely new Web site, built from scratch, next year, and I’m trying to broaden my horizons significantly online so I know what features we can shamelessly ape incorporate into the final product.

I’ve had an on-and-off relationship with Tumblr, but I decided to simul-post all of my YourHub daily photos to a new Tumblr blog (http://1photo.tumblr.com) to see just how easy it is and how we could incorporate that kind of simple blogging into YourHub.com.

It is just plain amazing how different the two experiences are. I feel like I’ve been pushing a hoop down a dirt road with a stick and then I got a Playstation 3 for Christmas. Anyway, check  them both out. I’ve been having a great time doing this. Here’s hoping I can make it five more months.

I know most, if not all, of the people on that floor at least a little bit and worked side-by-side with them during the Democratic National Convention this summer and they are resolutely the kindest and most skilled journalists you are apt to find working in Colorado or just about anywhere else.

How do I know they are great journalists? Check out how amazingly thoroughly they are covering their own demise. It’s a fascinating and very, very painful thing to witness:

Still reveling in the now two-day-old afterglow of the Pictureplane/Marnie Stern/Gang Gang Dance show at the Larimer Lounge on Friday.

Marnie’s the nicest person you could hope to meet. She personally held up a t-shirt to Sweet B to make sure it would fit her before she sold it to us. A self-taught shredder that sells her own merch? She’s total best-friend material. Now we just need to move to NYC.

I filmed that (with the Casio Ex-F1 set to 300fps) among the (police-estimated) 100,000+ (it felt like a solid 60 grand to me, but I’m not an expert) in attendance at the Obama rally in Civic Center Park on Sunday (I wasn’t nearly close enough to see the man himself).

Speeches are speeches are speeches, so I decided to focus on the crowd around me to see who drags themselves out of bed on a perfectly good Sunday morning to stand in a park for two hours.

I'm sure this ended up being something about those pesky communists.

Denver still looking all zombie-like for a while on Monday, thanks to cloud-filtered light and an October storm.

I had set the Ex-f1 up to catch some lightning strikes outside my office, but forgot that the motion trigger would be tripped every time someone came out for a smoke. I real like the way this one accidentally turned out.

I think this photo best captures how damn spooky downtown was for a while on Monday.

There is a small vein of high-def Muppet videos on Vimeo that really have little explanation. I don’t care where they are coming from, I just want them to keep it up.

But the open-source world came through with OpenTape, a self-hosted port of Muxtape that, while it can’t replace the awesome feeling of randomly clicking on a stranger’s playlist to discover new music, it does replicate the super-simple experience of using a Muxtape.
